Corrosion testing

Corrosion affects all metallic materials and can considerably shorten the service life of components. Suitable protective measures can be taken to counteract this. To be able to test these, the materials are exposed to a controlled, corrosion-promoting environment.

Depending on the application of the component, the conditions of the corrosion tests are adapted accordingly. Standardised test methods are available for this purpose. The tests are carried out according to DIN EN ISO 4628, DIN EN ISO 9227, DIN 50018 and PV 1210, among others.

All services and all standards according to which we test can be found in our service catalogue.

Corrosion test method

These methods are most commonly used.

  • Constant salt spray testing:
To test coatings for their corrosion protection effect, the test specimens are exposed to a saline atmosphere in a chamber. The spray mist can have different compositions (e.g. NSS = neutral salt spray mist, CASS = copper salt spray mist, AASS = acetic acid salt spray mist).
  • Corrosion alternation test:
The aim of these tests is to simulate environmental conditions as realistically as possible. Salt spray phases alternate with other climatic phases (temperature, humidity)
  • Filiform test:
This test evaluates the protective effect of metal coatings against filiform corrosion (thread corrosion). The coating of the component is scored for this purpose. After the material has been stored in a climate chamber with constant conditions, the formation of filiform corrosion is evaluated.
  • Kesternichtest
for simulating the corrosion-promoting effect of acid rain according to DIN 50018 - Tests in a condensation water alternating climate with an atmosphere containing sulphur dioxide
  • Condensation water test
with pure distilled water (e.g. according to DIN EN ISO 6270-2)

In addition, we offer evaluation of infiltration, evaluation of degrees of rust / blistering, cross-cutting, scratch tests, stone chipping and steam jet testing.
