Testing for pet food

To provide their pets with a balanced diet that meets their needs, pet owners usually resort to single and mixed feeds from the retail trade. In order to meet the special requirements of the animals, a complete and informative declaration of the ingredients is necessary.

In our laboratory, pet food manufacturers can have their products tested for all the parameters they need for proper declaration information. Laboratory analyses are also used for incoming goods and supplier control as well as for internal quality assurance in the manufacturing process.

Our laboratory analyzes all types of pet food (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, fish and rodents).

In addition to basic testing for crude protein, crude fat, crude ash and crude fiber, amino acids (e.g. taurine), vitamins and minerals are also determined. Ensuring safe feed also includes testing for contaminants, undesirable ingredients and microbial spoilage. Under certain circumstances, it may be necessary to test pet foods for allergenic substances such as cereals (gluten).

We examine compound feed (wet feed, dry feed, canned food) and single feed (meat and meat by-products, animal by-products, plant products) for these parameters:

  • basic chemical analysis: dry matter, crude ash, crude protein, crude fiber, crude fat
  • minerals and vitamins
  • contaminants and residues: dioxins, human/animal drug residues, PAHs, PCBs, pesticide residues, heavy metals
  • Screening, identification and quantification of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
  • Microbiological product testing: pathogenic germs, spoilage agents
  • Authenticity (e.g. animal species determination)
  • Amino acid composition: We carry out the determination of amino acids according to the classical methods according to VO(EG) 152/2009 and VDLUFA. Highly efficient own methods complete the profile.
    • Amino acids that can be determined: alanine, arginine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cyst(e)in, gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), glutamine, glutamic acid, glycine, histidine, hydroxylysine, hydroxyproline, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, ornithine, phenylalanine, proline, serine, taurine, threonine, tryptophan, tyrosine, valine.
